About Julimmal
A dictionary that follows the sources behind Korean abbreviations and slang.
Julimmal records the meanings, origins, and changing uses of Korean abbreviations and trendy expressions. Look up unfamiliar consonant shorthand, a phrase in a comment, or a catchphrase you remember hearing.
Each entry offers a short explanation for a quick answer, followed by sources and documented history for readers who want the background.
Why is the horse in the logo so narrow?

The name 줄임말 means an abbreviation: a shortened word or expression. In Korean, 말 can mean both “words” and “horse.” Since the dictionary shortens words, the logo playfully shortens a horse.
The brown, low-poly horse looks as though it has been squeezed from both sides by a hydraulic press. Its height and long legs remain, while its body and face are narrowed so much that its eyes pop out. This thoroughly “shortened horse” became our logo.
Recording context as well as meaning
The same expression can feel different depending on who uses it, where, and when. A line from a broadcast may become an everyday reaction; an abbreviation from one hobby may enter wider conversation.
We collect these changes in a word profile, showing which sources explain the expression, which dated uses were verified, and what remains unknown.
How to read an entry
- Meaning: a brief explanation, with an expanded form where available.
- Basic information: alternative spellings, the earliest verified source, and any supported period of popularity.
- Documented history: dates paired with what sources from that time establish. Reference numbers link to those sources.
- Origin: word formation or an account of how it spread, together with an evidence rating and the reason for it.
- Examples: examples written by Julimmal are distinguished from quotations found in sources. The English edition shows Korean originals alongside translations.
- Sources: links to verified articles, institutional material, or social media posts, with recorded check dates.
The earliest source is not a birthday
The earliest-source date belongs to the oldest evidence included in the entry. It does not mean the expression was coined that day. Earlier evidence may change the date. A later article recalling an older scene is dated separately from the scene itself.
Missing publication dates are not invented. A period of popularity is left unspecified when evidence is insufficient. Date-based sorting in the Korean lists reflects source dates, not a live popularity ranking.
How sources and evidence are assessed
Research focuses on identifiable sources such as news reports, public-agency publications, and academic material. Social media is used only to the extent that the original post, text, video title or description, and date were checked. Reading a video title is different from checking its audio or subtitles.
The evidence rating describes support for the explanation: High indicates an explicit explanation in a source; Medium may rely on one source or a partly verified account; Low indicates missing origin evidence or conflicting accounts. Read the accompanying note. A high rating does not mean the original creator is known.
Adding new expressions and memes
New expressions are gathered as candidates, selected, researched, and separately reviewed before publication. Publication status and the strength of evidence are different questions, so published entries retain their uncertainty notes.
For image and video memes, original links provide context. A widely shared image is not assumed to be free to reuse. If an image is needed, its owner, terms of use, and the scope of quotation for explanation must be checked separately.
Inclusion is not an endorsement
An entry does not recommend using the expression. Read caution notes for language with disparaging or discriminatory contexts. The listener, atmosphere, and formality of a setting can change how an expression is received.
Our original examples avoid identifying particular individuals or revealing personal information. Decide whether to use an expression according to the situation, even after you understand it.
