In the play, whenever the mother nags her son, who is returning to school, he appears as an object of comparison and becomes a hot topic among netizens.[1]

03Origin & word formation

Dong-A Ilbo traces the abbreviation of 엄마 친구 아들 to the popular online comic 골방환상곡, where a mother repeatedly compares her son, a student returning to university, with her friend's son. Online readers shortened the repeated comparison into 엄친아.
