- July 2016Maeil Newspaper: “We set a ‘혼놀 level’ and share challenges ranging from awkward eating challenges to grilling meat alone to dancing at a club.”[1]
- October 2016Dailyan cited ‘혼놀 (playing alone)’ along with words with ‘soul’ such as ‘혼밥’, ‘혼술’, and ‘혼캠’ and wrote that these ‘hon’ people create various cultural phenomena.[2]
- 2026-09-24The Maeil Newspaper covered the expansion of leisure time enjoyed alone and explained the meaning of 혼놀 as an abbreviation for playing alone.[3]
03Origin & word formation
Combines 혼자, alone, with 놀기, leisure or play. A 2016 Dailian article gives the expansion. Who first used it and when have not been verified. A 2026 Maeil Shinmun column also documents solo leisure expanding to travel, exhibitions, and performances.
